Throughout history, media with art and design has been used to share powerful messages. This video short, about Emory Douglas of the Black Panthers, is about how he used his art “to inform, to enlighten and to educate people.”
“Emory Douglas was one of two African American students in his graphic design classes at San Francisco City College. It was there that he became involved in political activism, and by the late 1960s he was serving as the Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party.”
The foundation of the idea is the art. Douglas states, “Art has relevancy, whether it’s to exploit you, or pacify you or enlighten you and inform you. It’s a language. That’s the power of it.” Douglas created visuals that were able to communicate and spread a message to a community where many could not read.
